Together towards 2050: policymakers set course for sustainable mobility on the Utrechtse Heuvelrug

As part of Pilot A within the MONA project, Utrechtse Heuvelrug National Park (NPUH) is encouraging a shift away from car use in favour of more sustainable travel options, such as walking and cycling. The NPUH is developing a shared long-term vision for sustainable recreational mobility. The consultancy firm Rebel Group (Living Mobility) is leading this process in close coordination with public authorities, transport providers and local stakeholders. The first working session of this collaborative initiative took place on 16 April 2025, and this process continued with a second consultation session on the 24 April 2025 to further shape the shared vision for sustainable mobility in the region.

Landowners, and representatives of other organisations gathered at Antropia in Driebergen-Zeist for the second consultation on sustainable recreational mobility on the Utrechtse Heuvelrug and its surroundings. This meeting marked the next step towards a shared vision of nature-oriented recreational mobility.

Strong administrative representation

Attendance was high: Deputy Van Schie of the Province of Utrecht was present, as were representatives of Staatsbosbeheer, the surrounding municipalities, NS, ProRail, ANWB, Utrechts Particulier Grondbezit and Hoogheemraadschap De Stichtse Rijnlanden (HDSR). They all share the same goal: ensuring that visitors can continue to enjoy nature sustainably in the future.

View of 2050: opportunities and bottlenecks

Advisors from Bureau Rebel presented the outcomes of the first official working session on 16 April 2025, in which a collective vision for 2050 was developed. How can we ensure that recreational pressure remains manageable? How can we keep nature vital and easily accessible?

The meeting generated a lively discussion. Using various statements as a starting point, Rebel guided the participants through a discussion of opportunities, bottlenecks, and potential solutions. Themes such as accessibility, nature conservation and smart mobility were discussed at length.

To be continued in autumn

The insights and reactions from this meeting will form the basis for the follow-up. A new administrative meeting is planned for autumn 2025, at which the substantive responses to the draft version of the joint mobility vision will be discussed. Step by step, the parties involved will work together to create a green, sustainable and accessible future for the Utrechtse Heuvelrug.

Thinking without limits: What could sustainable mobility on the Utrechtse Heuvelrug look like in 2050?
